The Dusty Home: A Look at Improving Indoor Air Quality.
Dust and poor indoor air quality can lead to respiratory complications and unhealthy living spaces. National’s suite of home performance services such as air sealing, insulation, and duct sealing can eliminate dust and deliver healthy air for you and your family.
Martin had been using National Heating and Air Conditioning for fifteen years for all of his heating and air conditioning needs. When he saw that National was now performing whole home energy audits he decided to give them a call and see if he could not do something about his excess dust and poor indoor air quality…
National came in and performed the homeowner interview and did a walk-through with Martin to see what areas the homeowner was having issues with. Then National’s Building Performance Institute (BPI) Certified Energy Auditor used a blower door test to evaluate the level of air infiltration in the home. Then they used a thermal imaging camera to pinpoint areas of concern.
After the thermal imaging shots were reviewed, National did a series of duct testing to determine the percentage of duct leakage that was present in the home. Martin had 38% leakage in his duct work and this was a significant issue that was contributing to the excess dust in his home. National sat down with Martin and came up with a game plan to address the indoor air quality in the home.
Martin’s home had 2.2 more than the recommended air changes per day and the air sealing and insulating reduced this by more than 40%. His comfort level in his second floor was greatly increased, and there was a drastic reduction in the levels of dust in the home. His duct work was sealed and the amount of leakage was drastically reduced. Martin was so pleased that he had National come back out a few months later to dense pack a wall with insulation.
